Roucan Loch Crematorium

roucan.jpg

On one side, - the view from our chapel window overlooks the loch, - while on the other, - your eye is drawn to the pine forest beyond a water cascade.

We have chosen to maximise the visual impact of the site, - by allowing the main cortege vehicles to pass as close to the loch as possible, - but the most important aspect of the design is that the site has been deliberately planned to preserve the natural beauty and delicate ecosystem of the area.

Since opening in March 2005, a number of wood sculptures have been introduced which are ideally suited to the environment. A memorial lodge, - in the style of a log cabin, -complete with a turf roof, - was created, allowing people to access The Book Of Remembrance in isolation from the main building. This unique facility also houses a memorial tree where people can place an engraved leaf. By the winter of 2009, - Roucan Loch will have a separate waiting area where visitors can remain dry and warm.

“Roucan Loch” is set in many acres of gently undulating countryside, -surrounded by a mature Scots Pine wood, completely hidden from any road, - yet less than four miles from Dumfries town centre. The loch is full of trout and bird-life, - including our own family of swans, - while the surrounding woodland abounds with deer, badgers, foxes, squirrels and owls. The building has been carefully designed in a Scandinavian style with a timber finish to blend in with its surroundings, - and great care has been taken not to destroy the existing plantations.

The grounds and woodland provide a fantastic site for a natural garden of remembrance, - and with that in mind, the grounds are maintained sympathetically, - allowing wild flowers to grow.

Individuals have the opportunity to purchase a tree as a living memorial, - below which they can inter cremated remains as well as create a miniature garden. There are many options available to you with regard to cremated
remains and your funeral director will be able to help you choose.

Roucan Loch’s unique qualities lie in its serenity and ability to place people at their ease, - leaving the rat-race behind to experience the beauty of this oasis of calm.
